After two years of virtual and cancelled state spelling bees, Gallatin County Superintendent of Schools Matthew Henry has announced that the 2022 Treasure State Spelling Bee will be held in person in Bozeman. Henry, director of the state bee, said that the 57^th Annual Treasure State Spelling Bee has been scheduled for Saturday, March 12, 2022, at 1 PM at Montana State University. The bee will be conducted using the traditional oral spelling bee format and pandemic protocols for contestants and audience members will be in place where possible.

The Treasure State Spelling Bee is the final competition for determining one student who will represent Montana at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC. The bee is open to students in grades 4 through 8 from all public and private schools in Montana and will feature the top 70 spellers in the state as determined by classroom, school, and county-level competitions. The Montana Television Network is sponsoring the event.

The 2022 Treasure State Spelling Bee will be held in Ballroom A of the SUB and will include a complimentary lunch for contestants and families and the opportunity for the spellers to meet local VIP’s. Bee officials are well-known television and print journalists. Prizes will be awarded to the top spellers and the winner of the bee will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May 2022 to compete for $50,000 and other prizes.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee reaches millions of students across the country and around the world through its nationally televised competition and by providing classroom materials and contests guides to schools that are enrolled in the program. Scripps’ goal is to help students improve their spelling ability and vocabularies and to develop correct English usage that will help them throughout their lives.

Participation in local bees provides an opportunity for students to gain experience in public speaking, develop confidence, and inspire a love of learning and social connections with peers. Local schools conduct classroom and school bees throughout December and January and Henry’s office confirmed that the Gallatin County Spelling Bee will also be held in person in mid-February 2022. Schools in Montana are eligible to enroll in the 2021-2022 Scripps program now through January 31, 2022. Educators can visit Spellingbee.com/enrollment to learn more and to enroll their schools in the program.

On November 23, 2021, at 10:44 AM, Gallatin County Dispatch received a call for a hiker with a possible broken ankle on the M Trail.  The hiker was one half mile up the trail.

Gallatin County Sheriff Search and Rescue Volunteers, AMR, and Bridger Canyon Fire responded to the M Trailhead.  Volunteers met with the patient on the trail, stabilized the injured ankle, loaded them into a one-wheeled litter, and subsequently transported the patient down the trail.  The patient was taken by AMR to Bozeman Deaconess Hospital for further evaluation.

Sheriff Dan Springer would like to remind recreationalists that an accident can occur on familiar, frequently used trails.  Dressing for the weather, having a charged phone, and hiking with a companion can greatly reduce rescue times and provide comfort during changing conditions.

Last week, the CDC and the ACIP expanded recommendations for booster shots to include all adults ages 18 years and older who received a Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine at least six months after their second dose. The Gallatin County Commission voted today to provide a $309,000 subgrant award from the county’s COVID-19 relief funds to Greater Gallatin United Way (GGUW) to stabilize and staff the afterschool childcare program known as kidsLINK. Out-of-school-time programming will assist families, businesses and school districts in Gallatin County by rebuilding the local economy and social services that have been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gallatin County District Court Judge Rienne McElyea recently delivered a split decision in the case Gallatin County filed against the City of Bozeman over the cost of improvements to roads around the Gallatin County Regional Park, Oak Street and Ferguson Ave., in Bozeman.

Judge McElyea ruled that the city’s Special Improvement District (SID) 745 was created illegally, but also ruled the county should have challenged the construction contract for the road improvements before construction started in 2017.

As the county’s challenge to the contract was not successful, Judge McElyea ruled the 2002 agreement the county entered into when it bought the Regional Park property required the county to pay the cost of the improvements, which totaled $903,426.65. In the past two years the county has already paid, under protest, $618,028.71, which will be used to satisfy payment of the construction costs.

Gallatin County Attorney Marty Lambert said, “In March and April, 2017, the County Commissioners were faced with a very difficult decision – whether to stop a major construction project on Oak Street when the city and the contractor were ready to start construction. I fully understand why they chose not to pursue that course.”

The county and city commissions will consider resolutions next week to wrap up the case. Neither the county nor the city plan to appeal.

The Gallatin Rest Home Auxiliary volunteers are again holding a virtual fundraiser to help provide the merriment and traditions of a normal holiday season to Gallatin Rest Home residents.

The mission of the Auxiliary is to enhance the lives of the Gallatin Rest Home residents in Bozeman. The group compliments nursing care with extra comforts and opportunities, such as holiday programming, tours, music, room furnishings, sensory garden therapy, personal care items, visiting, crafts, movement, needlework, all kinds of art activities, reading, the aviary, fish tank, picnics, companionship, and much more. Money raised in this year’s Vision of Sugarplums fundraiser will be used throughout the year. Every dollar donated benefits the residents of the rest home directly. Help us lift their spirits during these difficult times.
